New to Forum - Need advice on new camera purchase

I have Nikon D60 and recently purchased a Nikon D5100. The problem is that the older D60 takes PHENOMENAL photographs in comparison to the new D5100, which just plain stinks. I am going to return it today, and wondered if anybody out there had any insight on a better choice for another camera (staying of course within the price range set by the D5100). I've been told by professionals that I've got a pretty good eye and definitely a steady hand for photography and I'd like to build my skill with another camera. My personal portfolio is fairly good and is growing. Any insight and advice would be appreciated as soon as possible. Probably going to return the D5100 today. Warm regards, Andrea

Did you perform your evaluation using the same lens? Same subject and shooting conditions? Just wondering.

The D5100 is a substantially more capable camera than the D60. The D5100 is also a more complex camera than the D60 is.
For instance, the D60 only has 3 auto focus points while the D5100 has 11 auto focus points.

It usually takes some time to learn to effectively use any new gear.

Most, but certainly not all, entry-level camera image quality issues are related to user error rather than camera deficits.

The OP doesn't mention what about the D5100 images 'stinks' compared to the D60 images.

I think you should give it a second chance. D5100 is far better than D60.

Exactly. The D5100 is a better camera in 99.99% of ways and especially in the sensor area.
