Well as you can see guys I'm new to this site as well as photography in general. I've done the occasional point and shoot kinda thing with cheaper canon's but I'm looking to step up to the dslr arena!

Basically I'm having a hard time deciding between the Nikon D5000, Nikon D3100, or a Canon T1i. I'm open to any and all suggestions! I'm looking for a camera that'd be good for paintball photography as well as videography. Budget is the $500-$600 range, basically a good entry-level dslr

So far I've been offered:
$600 ~ Nikon D5000 (with stock goodies), 15-55mm VR lens and 55-200mm VR lens
(Will update list as I get/find more offers)

Post or PM, either is much appreciated!

Welcome to the site... You should read "Understanding Exposure" by Bryan Peterson... It is an amazing book for a beginner and it will help you a great deal. Don't buy in to all the criticism you hear about the book, just buy the book instead and you won't regret it. $16 dollars @ Amazon.com

That is a good deal for $600 if you're getting it new but not for a used one. You might as well go with D3100 which is $598 at best-buy with 18-55 mm VR lens and also records vids in HD.

See the comparison;

Digital SLR Cameras | Nikon Digital Cameras | D-SLR Camera ;)

The D5000 or the D3100 are great options.

I have both. (just sold the D5000 to upgrade to a D300s)

Out of the two, I shot the D5000 more. It feels better in the hand, and it feels better made.

That said, the D3100 can do everything the D5000 can, and better most of the time.

Either one is a win!

I also was leaning towards a Canon T1i when looking, but for the cost, I went with the T2i. Only point of relevance to your post is while looking, everyone basically recommended if you wanted to do video, to get the T2i.

Thanks for the sugggestions so far guys

The d5000 kit i was offered is very lightly used, not sure if that changes anything about whether it's a good deal for $600 or not so I'm still looking!

What I'm somewhat torn between the d3100 and the d5000 is the frame rate in video recording at 720p. The d5000 shoots at 24fps while the 3100 shoots at 30fps. Not too sure if this will make a big difference but I do plan on shooting tournament paintball videos and photos. The d5000 offers 4fps of continuous photo capture but the d3100 offers 3fps I believe.
