Can others edit my Photos
Photos OK to edit
I've been playing around with my Nikon D70 & Tamron XR lens with a Promaster UV filter since I got them 5yrs ago as a grad present. I do my post processing in Lightroom 3.

My family loves most of my work, but I'd like some opinions from the unbiased.

I like the first one best, the expression reminds me of a photo to maybe be used in advertising, advertising an academic course maybe, first thing that springs to mind for me!

I'd have to agree. They seem snap shotty to me as well, and the reds in #3 are badly clipped.

Don't get me wrong though, it's great that you picked up your camera. I strongly suggest you keep picking it up, from day to day. Keep shooting.

pop up flash? #1 pop up flash would have helped.. but night shots with pop up flash will give you mediocre results.

I like #1 the best too, but I'd probably recrop it so he wasn't right smack dab in the center. :)

#1 would have worked a bit better if the sunlight was also hitting part of the left side of his face. Had you had him turn 20° to his right, and you had moved to keep his shoulders at an angle to the camera.

#2 and #3, as mentioned, suffer from direct on camera flash.

Tamron XR lens with a Promaster UV filter

Why do you have a UV filter on the lens? It adds nothing photographically.

The lens came with the filter already on it. Prev owner dropped the lens and now the filter is jammed onto the end and for the life of me I can't get it off.

What do you guys mean by snap shotty? I took them yesterday at my cousin's wedding. I was by no means the hired photographer or anything...just happened to bring my camera along. All three shots were no more staged than a "look at the camera" deal. And my uncle didn't even know I was taking a shot of him outside before the ceremony. Pop up flash was used with both indoor shots at the reception. I hate using the pop up, but it was all I had at the time. Would it be beneficial to invest in something like a speedlight paired with a softbox like the Lumiquest? Mobility is key in most of my shots. I rarely take staged photos.

the clipped reds are my fault; I was editing with tired eyes. I'll go back and correct it.

Thanks for the encouraging words though. Hopefully spending more time on here and more time with my camera, the quality of my shots will increase.

How can anyone not like number 1? It's Dustin Hoffman!

What they mean by snap shotty is like in the 3rd pic you have the lady in red taking a pic of the same people you are. So with her in the shot it just ruins it for me.

haha fair enough. It's more of an inside joke between the family. the lady in red is my grandmother, and the fact that she's attempting to take a picture is just hilarious. my grandmother is so technically disinclined that the fact that she's trying to use a digital camera is kind of absurd.

I can see how the content of the photo isn't very appealing to someone outside of the family, but it happened to be one of the three photos I've edited so far. Haven't had the time to go through all 200+ shots I took that night.

They look like family snaps, which i suppose they are. There's not alot of interest there for people who don't know the people in the shots.

How about this for the 3rd one :-

I've cropped it, sharpened it, lightened it and de-saturated it.
