What's new

New to this, please critique

#1 and #2 I like but....

the light is not even in them. If you wanted to show texture, patterns, lines etc you need that surface be evenly lit.
The light is the main issue here, I like the way you composed them

this is jmho others may disagree

#2 and #3 but yeah, light, try a skylight or polariser filter too. And the setting which corrects for the edges being darker at certain apatures.

I had low expectations from your thread title but was pleasantly surprised at #1 and #2. They are definitely not typical 'newbie' pictures and have a significant amount of visual interest, to me at least.

The other two do nothing for me and would into the recycle bin if they were mine.

I disagree with Fokker about #3 (he is correct about #4, recycle bin). I like #3 because it nearly divides the image in half diagonally. It has that yen and yang feel to it. It is nicely exposed and sharp (from what I can tell on my phone). I would say it goes nicely with one an two in "patterns".

Wow, thanks for all of the responses thus far!

It sounds like shots #1 & #2 should have just been lit better at the time I shot them...but I also modified them using the out of box Canon software (#2 fairly significantly, at least compared to the original). In the interests of learning / clarifying further, could the lack of evenness in lighting be corrected by a better edit or is it a case of just needing a better shot to begin with...or both?

If it helps, here are the originals for each. I may have been overly heavy handed on the editing, but that would be good to know too :).

I liked 1, 2 and 3 though with 3 the lighting shadows in comparison to the edges didn't fit well. I liked the contrast with the sky.
4 was a sharp deviation from the other three and I was unsure of what I was supposed to look at

I really like #1 and #2, and I *do* like the gradient you have going on in #2.

I agree with the rest that #3 and #4 aren't keepers.

#3's composition doesn't feel right to me. It was a good effort, and you're clearly trying to see things differently, but it doesn't feel right. I don't know how I would have composed it differently. It also seems over saturated in the sky to me. #4 also seems a bit over saturated, the birds are a distraction (they look like dust specks) and it's overall just not a very interesting shot.

But... I do love your first two :)
