New without a clue...

I am very new to photography but definitely an art that is captivating. I have read tidbits here and there and get decent information. These bits of information are enough to lead me to better pictures not only in quality but in subject matter as well. But I need help getting over that 'hump' to keep my knowledge growing. So I ask, does anyone have any HIGHLY suggested book/reading material for the beginner?

I'm also a new guy and I'll say that so far 'Understanding Exposure' has been the best book I've read by a good amount. (cgipson1 really does read my mind :greenpbl

David Busch's 'Digital SLR Photography' is good as well.

'Light Science & Magic' by Fil Hunter, Steven Biver, Paul Fuqua is very interesting.

The 4 book set by Scott Kelby is fine too. I didn't enjoy it as much as those I listed above.

I read a few more that aren't worth recommending, in my opinion.


Next for me is Adobe Lightroom 4 books... 'The Missing FAQ' by Victoria Bampton and 'The Complete Guide for Photographers' by Martin Evening.

John Hedgecoe's complete photography course - John Hedgecoe - Google Books

THIS book, in almost any of its multiple editions, will teach you about how to become a photographer. Not a 'digital photographer'...but a "photographer".

I started learning photography about 35 years ago (more or less) which means I pre-date Bryan's book by a couple of years.... but with all the fuss I wanted to see if it was a good book... so I bought it.

Turns out it's a great book. He starts by explaining the basic concepts you need to grasp and he uses language that a non-photographer would be able to understand while introducing you to the terms photographers actually use.

There are certainly other books and more to learn, but this book is an excellent starting point.
