newbe question about backgrounds

how do you get the backgrounds on pictures like on the ones you get of your children at walmart or the kind we took at school. i have a 35m camera and a camcorder that i can transfer to computer. i also have adobe photoshop 7. i would like to take some pics with those types of backgrounds. thanks for any help

i know some of them are backgrounds pulled down and some of them are taken in front of a white sheet and when you get the pictures its a total diff back ground thats what im trying to find out how to do
