Newbie Here, Judge my photos

The whole point of shooting in a light tent is to not have a background...I don't see how that picture even has any relevance to this thread...

The background on your flower picture leaves a lot to be desired too. You've got what looks like a house/ porch and bushes, but the selective coloring wasn't even selected well so the color is bleeding into the bushes in the background.

Hum.. I see..
It was a Pint-shot picture in the hotel I was in San francisco. I used this picture to show what I was thinking was missing on the Jacobk's pictures. Sicne I was making a mistake by not understanding jacobk objectives, I was wrong.

Thank you for your comment :)
I too agree that living animals should be photographed in their environment whenever possible, BUTT the OP does not (at least in this situation) therefore I would refrain from suggesting that to the OP.
Here are some of my snake/ lizard shots in their natural environment (zoo)

what is the f#?

I think a dslr would have helped you. why did you decide to get a lesser quality camera?

Some people don't need all the functions of a dSLR. What the OP is trying to do is doable with the camera he has.

He has a CoolPix S9100, it looks like an upper level P&S to me. Quite capable of getting the job done.

but if he decides to do anything else he would be limited. unless money was an issue, i dont understand i guess.

and im surprised f9 doesnt give the DOF required...

and I'm limited by my Rebel XS versus the Canon 5D. The XS does what I need it to do at this point, and the S9100 should be fine for the OP right now. He can always upgrade later down the road, as I can, and will.

should there be a setting on my camera that allows me the change the f#? I read wikipedia and that is SOOOO confusing..haha..This whole camera stuff is really confusing to me.

As for the reason i didnt get a dslr. I was going to, but i dont really need it. I figured the P&S camera i purchased would be more then good enough for what I want to do with it. Also the price was a large factor. I could afford the camera but all the extra lenses and what not were out of my budget.

Aww man! I'd love to contribute as a newbie myself...but holy smacks I am scared of your pics!!!!! I think that says something...either that they are quite detailed and realistic...or that I am a wimp when it comes to snakes...X_X

No one has any ideas on where i can get large natural light type bulbs?

You'll want to look for "daylight" or "5500K" bulbs. They indicate the color temperature on the Kelvin scale.

Snake pictures.....need more light obviously, if that was the best you could have done lighting wise then I would spend more time processing the raw image afterwards. Play with levels, get rid of shadows, throw in a bit more color to make it pop. It can be done. Props on messing with a snake though lol

Here are a couple more i did today...what do you guys think? Better?

it appears that in 1,2, and 4 the head is still out of focus, maybe that's just the way his head looks. The snake itself looks better though, but the background lighting is very uneven, actually maybe that is vignetting, either way that is something I would try to correct if it were me. #1 just seems like a strange crop, I understand that you usually don't want the subject centered, but that just seems too lop-sided to me.
