Newbie I am..

Here I go thinking that one day I can take good pics of my family. I recently purchased Canon XS. I think my grandson is tired of me taking pics of him, but its how I can figure out this camera. He does let me practice but then tells me thats enough. Sad thing is hes only 3. I dont want to use automatic mode forever, so I need help. Is there maybe like learning videos with like step by step instructions? I can read all day but the mumble jumble i read isnt helping
