ok here goes i will be as brief as poss im a newbie, hands up its true, that untill very recently had only a passing interest in any type of photography the usual family occassions or vehicle images as you do as a grow lad, that only required basic equipment to reasonably produce (in this case a really good if elderly HP camera & printer package one of the first half brick sized and shaped versions & a small 4 MP chainstore cheapy that we kept in the car, and progressing onto our now inseperable and actually reasonably good Blackberry Pearl phone cameras, which are still in use today providing on the spot camera possibilities and i have to admit for day to day image taking they are actually not bad, providing of course there is semi decent contrast/light and so we get to the crux of the matter, i am by no means a proffessional nor do i wish to be, and in anycase have a few issues with that let alone knowhere near the capital that it would take to invest in suitable equipment although i do have the local area and time to induldge myself in trying to produce reasonable shots.so whats the problem i hear you all ask?
well the problems are twofold (possibly threefold) for which i require and hope to gain the valuable advice of those
here-in with way more practical and technical knowledge than i will ever likely have, so to the first problem, in that im at a loss as to what to buy as a good allround amatuers first real camera if you like (almost sucombing to the Nikon
L120 14MP as Argos has them at half price currently down to £120 ish, well they did they are currently out of stock
and cant tell if the offer will be repeated if/when new stock is avaiable, i can buy i today on Play.com however for
£179 i think but am swithering now and therefore seeking advice first) i as i say have no real idea what or who to go to
for real and impartial advise but being an avid forum user elsewhere and in fact a vehicle forum owner and Admin (the
second largest in the UK of its type but thats another story completely) but part of the reason i want to be able to
take better quality shots.
And so to the problems or rather solutions sought to maintain that i make the right choice first time, (i still have the Sony DV Handycam in its original box unused under the bed, laying testement to my previous buying process, and dont want to make the same expensive mistake again) you see im disabled with a muscle wasting desease much like MS in the manner in which it affects me, so fidgety buttons and switches are out, i also have walking difficulties and require to walk with a stick, which when added to balance issues, eyesight issues and lack of feeling in my fingers makes for several issues in correctly getting the best out of any equipment and there-in lies my problem in finding
somethng that fits the following criterias if not completely then as close to as possible? my new camera needs to be
relatively lightweight able to be hung round my neck for longish periods of time on stand-by, be able to be placed on
fully automatic mode, where it can/will select the correct mode for varying light conditions and situations in landscape
and portrait images let alone all the usual moving pet and/or vehicle images one in my position duly aquires and lastly
have a reasonably long battery life in rechargeables if at all possible an excellent longrange zoom and good close-up
quality would be a deal breaker and obviously as cheap as possible as its only a starter machine if i duly ( as i beleive
i will) take to the photography route then i would duly upgrade. my biggest fear is that i purchase something that remains wholly unusable to me and thus sits side by side with my Sony under my bed for years to come, i have
enjoyed the images ive thus far taken and the actual process of taking them with totally inadequate machines for
doing so out of which conservatively around a half turn out reasonably but with very slow shutter speeds etc usually
whatever your trying to take has moved, gone or changed by the time the camera has started and set itself up hence
my want of something that can stand on stand-by for longish periods whilst i say stumble up and down the foreshore
with our georgeous puppy even being able to get decent images of her bounding about and growing up would be
good, sadly she is bored by the time my BB starts and wont wait to allow us any semi decent shots.
We have just recently moved to a quaint cottage on the banks of the River Morar in Lochaber in Scotland from my
front windows all we can see is the expanding, daily changing Silver Sands of Morar and what a sight it is too, let
alone the extensive photographic oppurtunities around us merely going to the local supermarket in Maillaig with several amazing vistas throughout the mere 3 mile car journey to the ever changing scenery at the busy fishing
harbour and about a million other things to take up my extensive time available..so there you have it reccomendations
on a good all round capable in most circumstances fully automatic camera that is able to sit on standby and quite
robust is ideally what i require oh and that had a viewfinder so i have some idea what im taking would also be great. i
duly look forward to any and all replies, (if in doing so your refering to a specific make/model if you would be so kind
as to supply a link to details i would be gratefull of course).
I duly hope to be sharing some images shortly of this spectacularly stunning area of Lochaber in Scotland that we are pleased to now refer to as home as i fumble and stumble my way around it recording it as never before, my friends
cry me Dougie and i hope a lot of you will be refering to me as such in due course for now, take care as the snow
gathers pace throughout the country (were gladly currently snowless mainly due to the salty sea air i suppose, but its
not a worry spectacular shots or not i would far rather do without, just south of us from around Glenelg down to Fort
William and on to Glencoe and Glenshee apparently have in several places got upwards of a foot landed thus far, so
good skiing i suppose).
Anyway ive rambled for way to long as is, all answers will be recognised and answered and all help appriciated.
