I think I might like a little less of the OOF blue in the first one, but the picture of the baby is lovely. The third one looks awkward and uncomfortable but it might be somewhat the way there's none of the body showing and whiteness instead.

I'm not sure which one was being referred to; I see baby photography where babies are propped up on their arms which isn't necessarily the best position for a newborn. The type job I've done has been working with infants w/delays and it depends on the child, but the neck strength may not be developed enough yet, so I'd recommend always supporting a newborn infant's head.

Those shots with the kids head on arms are composites or should be. With the parent holding up the child's head and then editing it out in post.

I have an Infant posing stool that is made of foam rubber . It has holes cut in to it for an arm to reach through and support the child ,unseen . (Bought it somewhere longtime ago.) One side is angled ,the next side has a seat type cut-out . It helps to take some of the fear away from the parents . My point is ,this type of stool might be worth looking into ,if you are going to do infants much . I can and will add a photo tonight if anyone is interested ?

#2 is my favourite maybe a TAD more editing on the skin to take out some of the red patches most notably on #3. But thats just personal taste. Great shots.

not enough DOF in these for me.
#1 and #4 in particular needed more DOF. the huge OOF spaces are pretty distracting.
#3 is the best of the set in my opinion. the angle of the baby is not so horizontal that 3/4 of the baby is OOF due to the shallow DOF.
when you have the baby more horizontally visible, I think the whole baby being in focus makes for a better picture.
what i DO really like on these is the lighting. very well done!

Why thank you Pixmedic for you comments about the (natural) light . DOF was a personal choice, obviously. But I am sad I didn't get any true horizontal (on the same plane) shots of the baby. I really wanted to get some that were all in focus but after 6 hours of working with this baby I called it quits. I swear I woke that baby up EVERY TIME I MOVED HER!!!!! Talk about needing patience LOL. I actually left this shoot feeling SO defeated, I had big plans...all these poses I wanted to do...so much variety....babies don't follow plans I learned (well I re-learned....for the bazillionth time).

that is why I dont do baby pictures. I only shoot people that can follow instructions. :mrgreen:
fortunately for me, I have the ability to pick and choose what I want to photograph.
Despite my affinity (and preference) for OCF, i am not against "natural light"....WHEN it is sufficient to get good pictures.
I dont have any problem saying the lighting on these is good even knowing it is only natural light, because its true.
Ambient lighting was obviously good for these, it is even, no harsh shadows, no mixed lighting issues, no hotspots.
the advantage to having flash is, obviously, when natural lighting conditions arent like this, you can MAKE it like this.

YES!!! Btw I need to chat with you about my flash. For some reason lately it keeps switching back to TTL as soon as I switch it to M. It will change back 3-4 seconds later. :/ Any ideas? (speedlight 430)

If you can photograph an Infant with in the first 14 days of birth they will sleep better , even better with a full stomach . I suspect you already know this type of stuff ,But other readers may not . FWIW ,I haven't got away with a infant shoot under 4 hours yet . I warn the parents before hand . I also keep the room warm ,so by the end of the shoot I'm a big ball of ...Wet . It IS a workout !
