The angle of the camera isn't what I referring to its the way you cropped it. You've chopped the baby and the crate in half.
Either:
1) zoom/crop in closer to frame the babies face
or
2) crop looser to get the whole subject in the picture.

The point was to get a unique point of view.
Any other c&c? I want to know things that I didn't do on purpose. Lol

I want to know the good stuff! I want c&c on the baby in general, skin, sharpness. Not the dang crop.

*sigh* It is NEVER wrong to experiment with new techniques, but you have to be critical of yourself to know what works and what doesn't. Baby photos are meant to create a serene, peaceful feeling... the composition you chose creates a lot of tension. And again, the b/w conversion has a green or blue tint and the light seems flat.

I think you're on the verge of having a "light bulb moment." Don't get discouraged when you hear you're not quite there yet.

This is my third newborn I've ever done and I think I did ok. I am not professional by any means. This is my hobby.

Im going to give you both sides here, because I think there are valid points in both.
first, don't discount C&C so quickly just because it is adverse to your feelings on the picture. It is much easier to claim "artistic license" on a photo that may not be working for most people than it is to humbly accept critique and move on. you posted on a critique forum, so take what you get gracefully, use what feedback you feel is worth using, and take the rest in stride.

secondly, often times people will discount non-traditional portrait styles as "poor composition". Personally, I think this is because we have been extremely acclimated to seeing the same style pictures over and over the internet and they have become "the norm". (mostly for baby pictures and portraits) never be afraid to branch out and try new things. If you are pleased with a photo, then that's all that matters. I think something besides the same old overdone FB baby poses is actually refreshing, as there seems to be little to no innovation on the baby photo front. I think the tighter crop on this picture is nicely done. a little tweaking on the B&W may be needed, but im not a fan of B&W to begin with so, someone else is probably better suited for that part.

overall: a nice shot, especially with the tighter crop. the baby looks well placed, and quite comfortable.
my only composition nitpick might be that its a HAIR too much of an overhead shot. I might have come down just a LITTLE more. not much though.

as far as other C&C goes, it looks like this was shot at f/1.8 ish? looks like a shallow DOF to me. this seems to be very common with baby photos.
personally, i would stop the lens down a bit and get the baby's shoulder, upper arm, back of the head, and rest of the blanket in focus.

I could be wrong though! I often forget things.

I've went onto my laptop not my old desktop and I now see the "green." Woah! :er: Yeah i'll definitely need to fix that.
Also need to get my dang thing calibrated!!

I really like that you're playing with the composition, but something about it seems "off." Is this a standard crop ratio? Also, the b/w rendering is looking a little green on my screen.

Ok when posting for critique you need to be able to take the good with the bad. As good as it is the hear what you've done right you will learn for more more from what you did not. Gracefully taking critique and learning from your mistakes will allow you to grow your craft with your style and still have a technically correct photo. I understand the first one was out of the box which in itself is good. But the tilt and crop just don't work it just looks awkward.

now for the extras you posted. The feet shot, well Im not a fan of baby feet lol think I'd have cropped a bit closer as they are the main subject but otherwise nicely done. the baby in the crate #2 I prefer this shot to the first one posted. Angle is more flattering to baby and the tilt isn't as awkward.

third pose is ok I would have come more to the right on baby not really straight on but a little more face and less top of the head would bring more attention to your subject. The fourth and last one I like although I would have stopped it down just a smidgen. the shoulder and chest are too soft compared to the tiny fist in the middle.

Even with creative licence you still want your pictures to be flattering to your subject. After all they are portraits and not just art. You want your creativity to add to your work to make your pictures speak for themselves.

Seriously. Mind you... I'm not suggesting that there isn't a good reason for it... maybe you're trying for some kind of message here, but if you're not... then what is this supposed to say to us?

All I'm suggesting is that you consider your choices and what they mean and what they communicate.
