** I have searched for this type of comparison, but didn't find a thread**

Anyone have any experience using both of these lenses?

There is someone locally selling the 80-200 for $700 and wanted some input to see if this is a good deal/ real difference between the two.

Thanks in advance fellas.

Which version of the 80-200 f/2.8? There are 6 of them:
  1. the 2-ring AF-D
  2. the 2-ring AF-S
  3. the newer push-pull AF-D
  4. the older push-pull AF
  5. the AF-s
  6. the AI

I have a couple of weddings lined up and would like to pull the trigger on a purchase instead of continuously renting. With no VR what real difference have you guys noticed.

VR is only useful for shooting still objects. It's useless for shooting anything that moves. The 80-200 is a fantastic lens. At $700 it's a steal.

Yes. It's a great second lens as long as you have either a good wide zoom or mid range zoom as your main lens.

I have a 50 1.8 and an 85 1.8, and I have learned how to use those more effectively. So I am just waiting on a green light on a 70-200 VR I (trade plus cash) or the purchase of this 80-200.

Thanks for the info guys!

if you can get the 70-200 vr1 at a good price, go for it. but the 80-200 is still excellent.

the 80-200 is $700 here locally...

I am going to wait on the decision for the 70-200 VR I, and if that falls through. I'll go the 80-200.

I have already made room in my bag for either one. lol

If I was serious about shooting a wedding then I wouldn't be satisfied until I had this lens.

2164 Nikon 24-70mm f/2.8G ED-IF AF-S Wide Angle-Telephoto Zoom Nikkor Lens with 5 Year U.S.A. Warranty

I usually rent the 24-70 locally for the weekend. So that will be covered.
