I swear I saw before about focusing a nikon 50mm 1.8 lens on a D40 but can't find it now. I know it don't autofocus, but I think I saw something about holding the shutter button 1/2 way and looking for a green light when in focus? help? lol thanks, Jeff

The 50mm 1.8D will not auto-focus, BUT when you get it in focus, it will activate the green 'focus' indicator in the viewfinder indicating that you have the subject in focus.

thanks guys. I read it before but didn't put them together,,,duh! lol Thanks again guys! Now I can buy the 50mm 1.8 AF lens again, but confidently this time!

It's kind of annoying at first, but after a little use you start to know about where it needs to be from the distance, and then it takes very little time to focus from there.

I just 'bit the bullet' and ordered this lens for my D40. I hope this time I know enough to make it work for me! I had one hell of a time last time I bought it cuz I didn't know what I was doing! lol Wish me luck plz...Jeff

p.s. I should have it on the 5th so expect photos! :)

I just ordered it today too!

I just ordered it today too!

LOL, then wish us both luck! lol I don't want to return this one, it takes great pics when focused! I just looked at the 1.4 and it's always at 1.4? BUMMER!! Why would they do this? You can't always want that shallow of a depth of field which is why I bought this one again! I prefer to stay around 10 when possible, but I like to have the freedom to 'move around the field' ! lol

Im pretty sure that its not always at 1.4. That would be pretty silly.

Why would you want to shoot anything other than 1.4?

/sarcasm.

So I was online last night when an email notification popped up from the store I bought this from, and my lens was here already! I got this lens today instead of Friday and have already taken my son to our local "sitting park" by my home for some casual 'learning how to use this lens' photos. It really is ALOT easier to use than I remember! I'm not sure why I couldn't get it to work right the last time I owned one ( right after I started photography ) , but I sure can now! Focusing takes a little effort but once its correct, this takes awesome pics like I recalled it doing...I'm VERY GLAD I bought this lens and will post some more appealing photos asap.

NO, I bought it before...returned it cuz I couldn't figure it out, learned what I now know since having it last time, and just bought another one. I didn't even know how aperture worked when I bought it last time so how was I really going to figure out manual focusing on my D40? I knew next to nothing last time so I learned what I know now before buying it again cuz I know it takes great photos! Understand now?

How do like having the 35mm and 50mm? Is it worth having both?

YES, I feel it IS worth having both. The 35mm is a nice lens which focuses automatically on my D40, so I'll use it for moving objects...The 50mm lens will be better for indoor/outdoor portraiture (to me) because I can stand further back and not have to worry about MY shadow in their pics, and I feel that since I'm not so close, more light could get to my sensor so I'm not always getting the "to dark" message. I wondered this myself but I feel it's going to work out for me. The 15mm difference seems like very little, but it's really alot!
