Nikon 5200 or 5300 vs Canon T3i, T5i, or SL1

Awesome man! D5300 AND the 70-300 VR-G>>>sweeeet! WiFi is about shooting, and then sharing immediately. Which is fine....but there's something to be said for shooting, then downloading to a computer, then editing, and THEN sharing work that has "that extra edge". Of course, people today also use their phone as a display method to show their d-slr photos: I know I certainly do, and "talls" look great on my phone!

Just so you know...the Nikon 3000-series and Nikon 5000-series cameras can actually mount and shoot basically 99.9% of F-mount lenses and lens accessories made since 1959!! With NO need to modify or update those golden oldies. So...yer $10 pawnshop 28mm f/2.8 Soligor for Nikon F will mount and shoot on her D5300!

I think the WiFi will constantly seek to update, and will drain the battery faster than if it's shot off.

Glad to hear she likes the new camera. If the wifi works the same as the adapter for the 5200 does then have her open the wifi settings on her iPhone while the camera is on and close by, if the cameras wifi is enabled the iPhone will see it as an available wireless network. If she connects to that network the iphone will "see" the camera

Perfect. That's exactly what she did....after she read the owner's manual section about it. She doesn't mind reading if it's something she's interested in. To conserve battery life, does she need to disconnect from wifi when done? If she doesn't, will it keep connected and thus drain the battery? Does turning the camera off then on again d/c the wifi connection? Thanks.

I'm pretty sure that the Iphone will remember any wifi network it connects to (provided you tell it too or it's setup that way by default) so anytime that network becomes available it will reconnect automatically. So if she shuts off the camera it will lose the connection of course but it should find it again and reconnect when she turns it back on.

Oh, quick edit.. I'm pretty sure Derrel is correct, the wifi feature does draw a lot of battery power from the camera when it's left on.

I will let her know to shut it off when not needed, then. Just an aside, her best friend and her best friend's dad came over this evening and saw the camera for the first time. The friend brought it over to her dad and said "Dad! See? This is what I've wanted!" Her dad said "I thought you wanted a Canon?" to which she replied "No, I've always wanted a Nikon!" The dad then asked me "How much, 3 figures?" I said "No, a bit higher." Before he collapsed, he responed with "Thanks, your killin' me!" This gift may be responsible for an increase in health care expenditures in her immediate circle for awhile.

This is awesome, what a terrific gift. Great that you and your daughter share a common passion and I'm sure she was thrilled with this gift. Way to go dad!
