Nikon 60mm f/2.8

Is this an ok starter for macro? I just ordered this lens, and the reviews seem pretty good. Does anybody have this lens? If so, how do you like it?

Hey I know it's a bit too late, but may be you should have considered this instead:

It's 105mm. I have tried the newer version with VR on a D90.... absolutely stunning lens. Now, this isn't the same lens, but you will get much better range in terms of being able to stay further away from the subject. This helps when taking photos of nervous creatures like dragonflies and butterflies. Price is pretty good. I don't think the new 60mm has VR either. If I were you, I will get a used version of this instead.

Well I was actually going to be using this lens mainly for flowers. I want to do some abstract flower photography. I've always loved doing pictures of flowers. Not so much into bugs!

I have the earlier 60mm f/2.8 AF-D series model...sharpness is high, contrast is high, and the results are very good. I expect that you ordered the newer AF-S G series model, which is supposed to have excellent color saturation.

Yes, I ordered the newest one. It looks like it does a pretty good job. Reviews are good. Looks like it will do what I want it to do. I'm planning on doing some flower photography (psyched for Spring to get here) so I can print out some pictures on canvas and hang them in my new house!

People who have the "new Nikkors", like the 105mm AF-S G and the 60mm AF-S G are commenting on the "new Nikkor" color and saturation look, as well as the almost hyper-realistic detail resolution that these two new macro lenses produce. I do not have either of these two newest Nikon macro lenses, but I have seen some example photos from both lenses, and there is a sort of "look" that the new Nikkor lenses have, compared against the older stuff I've grown up with.

Is it a bad "look"? I've only looked at the sample photos amazon had. I really wanted the 105, but didn't have enough money saved for it since I just recently bought the 24-70 as well. :-/ I'm not complaining though!

Also, I'm thinking this would be a pretty good lens for getting pictures of infants. Like their feet, eyes, hands, nose, etc. What do you think?
