Nikon 70-200 2.8 photo - playing around with the 50 1.8G

Thought I would play around with the 50mm 1.8G today. I did not really anything in mind and so I pulled out the 70-2.8 and took a shot of it. I was playing with some lighting. I had the a flash coming from the left side. I put a light in the background behind my printer and also there was a light source coming from the right. I am still very new with lighting so forgive my lack of knowledge and what I am using as a subject. My kids did not want to pose today...

Over all I thought it was an interesting picture with the background colors and what not.

I find that the SB-700 is very bright and harsh. When I have it off camera I can't seem to figure out how to adjust the flash output. Maybe I should read the manual. I and am still trying to figure out how to make it a softer light without so much processing.
