Nikon D90 Help!!!!

Seems to be plenty of detail there, but it does seem a little under exposed.
Try upping exposure and use some local contrast, I use apature and it's called definition.

(it's not the camera)

Actually, the photo is a lot under exposed, 1.25 stops to be specific.

Also, because of the over cast sky the gull is not well separated from the background, light wise, so the subject doesn't 'pop'. With overcast skies harsh shadows are not a problem, but really flat lighting is.
Using flash would have separated the bird from the background, making the bird 'pop'.

So my tip is - learn more about the technical aspects of how to do photography, like lighting, composition, camera metering modes, how the metering mode used affects the in-camera light meter, camera focus modes, etc.

Yep as mentioned this isn't a D90 problem as so much as a learning more about lighting and composition and nailing exposure.

Different angles, No need to fill the frame with just the bird in the frame depending on angle and composition can achieve many varied results. In this instant if I took this shot I would be considering B&W maybe? with some curves adjustment for Lights,Darks.

On shooting it would try going lower and different angles depending on backgrounds.

Also from flickr if you select the envelope,Facebook, etc down arrow from pic. There is an option for size and type of code. if you select medium and click on BB code instead of default Html button then you can copy and paste the BB code into this thread which would insert the picture here.

Didn't know if you knew that bit or not.
Good luck and keep trying.
