What's your camera body?

according to your profile you have a d3000
If that is the case then really the only option is the 50mm G lens

that lens has Built-In focusing motor.

The D lens does not, and thus requires a body (nikon d70, 90, 7000, 7100, all the FX cameras, etc) that has an in-body focus motor.

Without the focus motor you would have to manually focus everything.

NIkon 50mm 1.8G is the better lens but not by much, it is more modern then the 1.8D so overall its slightly better but it cost about 100$ more then the 1.8D

Both lens are Auto Focus lens but only the Nikon 50mm 1.8G will AF on all Nikon DSLR cameras while the 1.8D doesnt have an AF motor in the lens so it will AF only on the higher DSLR Nikon bodies like the Nikon D90, D7000, D7100 and all the FX bodies.
The 1.8D will not AF on cameras like Nikon D3000, D3100, D5000, D5100, D5200, D5300

While the Nikon AF 50 mm f/1.8D will not auto focus on a D3000, the D3000 has a feature known as Rangefinder that is a manual focusing aid.

See page 132 of the D3000 User Manual. Note: The D3000 User Manual is a PDF file on the software disc that was included with the camera.
The D3000 User Manual can also be downloaded at NikonUSA.com

Simple, get the AF-S so it will auto focus with your camera. I have the AF model and it works fine with my D7000 but it has a built in focusing motor. Both are razor sharp from about f/2 on.

The Nikon 35mm f/1.8G is also an excellent lens and cost right under $200. Its one of my favorite lenses for DX bodies

I also suggest the 50mm 1.8G. I like it much more than my old 1.8D lens.

If you're doing portraiture, get the 50mm 1.8G for sure. However, if you're looking for a walk-around lens, you may want to reconsider the $200 35mm 1.8G (DX) lens.

The 50mm 1.8G does have superior bokeh to the 35mm 1.8G. Otherwise, the two lenses are basically indistinguishable, aside from their focal lengths, on a crop sensor camera.

I really like the aesthetics of the D lenses. Perhaps i'll purchase one just for display purposes.
