I have a nikon f55 and would like to add a flashgun, does anybody no an independant flash that will fit instead of using a overpriced nikon flash

Welcome to the forum.
There are plenty of off-brand flash units that will work.
The Vivitar 283 is one that I see recommended most often. Really, any flash with an auto thyristor would probably be workable. I have a Braun flash that I use with my Canon cameras.
Also check out Sunpack, Sigma etc.

i use a 285 on my D70s, fairly similar to the 283. they take a while to get used to as they're manually controlled but with the right settings can give good results.
there are lots of fairly inexpensive used nikon flashes such as SB-28's, 50DX's etc for a reasonable price in the UK. check out magazines like amateur photographer
