Nikon Kit Lens

I have the 18-55mm kit lens for my Nikon D5000, the plastic lens mount doesn't make me too confident. Can I buy metal bayonet to install on the lens?, or am I stuck with the plastic mount that's bound to brake at some point in time.

Honestly its so cheap to replace that whole lens why bother. Also, its unlikely to have it break on you.

The longer 55-200 kit I used for a while, and even picking the cam/lens up by the lens itself it never had a problem with the plastic mount.

I don't need to worry about my tele lens as I have the 70-300, but I really like the 18-55, I think it is a very sharp lens, even more so then the 18-105 or 18-200 and I just want the lens to be more secure on the body, and I do not want to have to replace it.

It's possible to replace the bayonet, so it's just a matter of locating (if there is one out there) a metal bayonet that will fit that lens.

Personally I wouldn't worry about it. If it ever drops and breaks, wouldn't you rather that the three tabs on the plastic bayonet take the damage instead of the glass? The replacement plastic bayonet is under $10 direct from Nikon.

op, your lens mount wont break unless you do something really stupid. in which case youd probably need a whole new camera. the lens is so light that it puts little torque due to weight on the mount.

Add me to the - you don't need a metal flange - group.

FWIW, the plastic one can't get bent out of shape, but the metal one can.

If I were you I'd worry more about the other camera side of the mount flange, because the screws that hold it into place are just screwed into the plastic D5000 chassis. It's more likely those screws would strip out of the plastic, before the lens flange ever broke.
