Does Nikon have an equivalent range to Canons "L" series??

No. They don't market their lenses like Canon, but you can pretty much tell by the price.

Nikkor has Gold Ring lenses. They are not touted as Canon does with "L" lenses, but if there is a gold ring on the end of the lens, it is an indicator that better optics are in the lens. As Mav said, the price will be the first point as to the quality.
