Nikon SB-25 locking up

I have a Nikon SB-25 that I'm uising off-camera that's connected to my D5000 with a PC cord. I can fire it once ok, but then have to turn it off and back on again to make it work. Frustrating to say the least. And it doesn't seem to matter what mode it's in. My Sunpak 511 works every time with the same hook-up. HELP!:hug::

Try with another camera too to isolate the flash as the cause.

Has it always done it?

Thanks. tried that. Then changed the batteries. Amazing how that can help. Sometimes I'm not the brightest bulb in the marquee.
