Nikon SB-600 Question

I was wondering if anyone could tell me if I can use an SB600 flash as an "optical slave" with my D90 and SB900 or if I have to buy transmitters. Thanks!

Pretty sure the SB900 has a "commander" mode, in which case the SB-600 can be a "slave" yes.

You dont need transmitters.
Just setup the SB900 as a commander and the SB600 as a slave
The same way as you can command the SB600 from the D90, the SB900 can command the SB600.

SB900 can be both (commander and slave)
SB600 can only be slave

The SB-600 cannot be an optical slave in SU-4 mode, which is an older non-proprietary mode where it will fire whenever it sees any other flash signal, regardless of where it came from (even a different brand, or a point-and-shoot). However, the SB-600 can still act as a slave for Nikon's proprietary CLS system.

Just to expand on that, if you had a D90, an SB-900, and an SB-600, you could:

• Use the SB-900 mounted on the D90's hotshoe to control the SB-600.
• Use the D90's popup flash to trigger the SB-600.
• Use the D90's popup flash to trigger the SB-900.
• Use the D90's popup flash to trigger BOTH the SB-600 and SB-900 at the same time, even at different power levels if you wanted to.

Read your camera and SB-600/SB-900 user's manuals.

As OrionsByte pointed out you can use the built-in, Nikon CLS (Creative Lighting System) system.

Can I do this with more than one SB600? For example, if I wanted to use two of them?

yes, as many as you like with multiple channels allowing differing intensities.

You can use as many flashes as you like and if you want to go further you can also set them up on different channels for different effects/intensities and so on.

you dont need to buy transmitters. i have a d90 (and sb600) and all you have to do is set your onboard flash to commander mode, and set the sb600 to wireless mode. you can control the output from the in camera menus.
