It will work fine IF you buy the AF-S version (built-in focus motor). Older versions will work, but they will not auto-focus on your body.

You'll need the VR version, the $500 one, if you want Autofocus, otherwise, get the 55-200VR, much better lens.

The lens has gotten decent reviews on-line. I bought it with my D90 because there was $200 off with the camera purchase. It does have a great zoom capacity but I haven't used it much. I have a old Vivitar lens on my film SLR that went to 205mm and with a 2x multiplier to 410mm and it is OK as far as reach. With this new Nikon lens you can get a 450mm equivalent ... I don't know how much more reach I'll get with an additional 40mm but I do have times I need a longer zoom. I will say I did use my old Vivitar for nature (animal) photography a lot.

Thanks guys..what do you suggest to buy that is under $200..im on a short budget right now...=/

I would say look for a used lens if you need/want another lens. I was assuming that you were speaking of the newer version on the 70-300 which has VR and goes for over $500. From what I understand the older version isn't as good.

Tamron makes a 70-300 with the motor (but no VR) for under 200. I have it and it is pretty good, but it gets a little soft at 300. But I paid $125 new for it, so it is still a great lens for the price.

^^thanks for the info Ross!Do you know if it would work for D40??

Yes, it would work on the D40.

I have the Nikon's AF-S 70-300 mm VR on my D60 and really like it. check my link below, all of the picture were shot with this lens

Don't buy anything until you've tried the 70-300 AF-S VR. The VR needs to be seen to be believed. I spent $450 on mine and, while it is very short for what I want, it's a good budget lens.

Look through my photostream, most of the stuff there is done with it.
