Nonsensical Numerical Names. A Rant.

6D, 60D, 5D, 550D, 7D, D700, D7000... Aaagghhh!!

Can't they throw in some actual words for names? How about the Canon Aqua, or the Nikon Dragonfly? Anything but more meaningless numbers!

Canon has a bunch of names for it's cameras -

A Canon EOS Rebel T3i here in the USA, is a Canon EOS Kiss X5 in Japan, while in the rest of the world, it's the Canon EOS 600D.

A Nikon D90, is a Nikon D90 worldwide.

Nikon and Canon have logical numbering systems.

Canon's xxxxD is their base entry-level, xxxD is 2nd tier entry-level, xxD was prosumer until the entry-level 60D, xD is now prosumer, with 1D reserved for pro grade.

Nikon's had to play around with their entry-level numbering system because they were running out of numbers, but it still has an organisation to the numbering system that is similar to Canon's

Then there is Sony's NEX series, which not only is nonsensical, but often followed by a random letter, and is not in sequential order.

NEX F3, NEX 5, NEX 5N, NEX 5R, NEX 6 (which is coming out AFTER the NEX 7)...

I refuse to shoot anything with the word "rebel" stamped on it. I'm just not into hoedowns, drunken bass fishing and monster truck rallies.

After all, it's not like there's an infinite quantity of numbers out there.

True, but when your entry-level grade numbering system goes D40, D50, D60, D70, D80, D90, and your prosumer grade system goes D100, D200, D300, etc, something has to give.

So they went to Dxxxx for the entry-level grade.

They will shortly run out of Dxxx for the prosumer lineup, and it's anyone's guess where they go from there since Dxxxx is already in use. D10000, D710, D810?

For speedlights they went SB-900, SB-910.
