Now Why Haven't I Thought of That!

Oh Dear Lord! Boutique Beer!

Not sure about north of St Louis, but south of there you get into heavy catholic communities. The rural churches were always having "pick-nicks" to raise money for one reason or another, featuring food, music, and BEER. The "boutique beer" of choice was Schlitz. They sold it in tin buckets, and very rarely checked age. If you were old enough to carry a bucket and had a little money, you could get if filled. We always jokingly referred to it as "green beer", because of the after effects the next day.:grey:

I have to admit I was traumatized by the sale of Budweiser to the Belgians. It wasn't great beer it was good enough beer and yes I've tasted better beers, but it was our beer. Now old Augie is turnin' in his grave and there's a curse upon that reprobate son of his. In Saint Louis beer was more than just beer. We made Augie's beer in Saint Louis and we drank Augie's beer because Augie was Saint Louis's first citizen. He loved the city and all of us and it showed. The best job to have in Saint Louis was to work for Augie. He was loyal to a fault. He was our greatest philanthropist; bills got paid -- if the Symphony ran short for the season you could count on Augie. If a school district needed a new athletic field there was Augie. Today is opening day for the Cardinals and it's so bittersweet -- the old Bush stadium, Augie gave that to the city and every year he was there to throw out the first pitch. We all knew he wasn't doing that out of obligation, he was never happier and the whole city cheered. Augie dies and bleep bleep junior up and sells the business. I haven't drank a glass of Budweiser since. And when the subject of beer comes up now I get depressed and open a bottle of bourbon.
