Number of Pictures

Just curious as to what is considered a decent amount of pictures to give to a client. My reason for asking this is..... A friend of mine recently got married, and he just got back his wedding pictures. (on a disk) There were over 3000 pictures for them to sort through. I remember when I got married (film days), the book of proofs we got had about 50 pictures in it. Another friend of mine was out taking some random pictures, and came across a couple doing engagement pictures, and they were doing pictures for about 2-3 hours. That also seems like a lot of pictures for an engagement shoot. I would think for an engagement shoot, maybe 50-100 shots would be standard. So from the pros that are out there, what is considered to be standard for different occasions now a days? (feel free to toss examples other than the 2 I've suggested)
