Old filter on new lens

I found an old Hoya skylight 52mm filter. WOuld this work with my 52mm Nikon lens? Would the threads fit together? Is it okay to use non-Nikon products?

If the shoe fits, wear it... or if the filter fits, use it. Just be careful while threading them together; take it slow and easy.

New guy here. So, if you have a Nikon, you can only use Nikon products? I don't have a Nikon, but surely someone, non-Nikon, makes products compatible with Nikon.
