Old Hobby

Before I acquired my first DSLR, I spent a lot of time metal detecting. Many people think we only look for old coins, but truthfully, relics are more desirable than most coins. Some of my most favorite items found were everyday, well-used items.
Flat buttons were hand crafted items everyone used and needed. These are from the 1700's and a favorite of mine.

This old early 1800's gold-gilded button would have been a sign of affluence and highly prized. Believe it or not, it has period thread still attached to the "eye" and so, remains just about my most favorite find to date.

I see you are from PA. Any American Civil War artifacts found?

I have found a 58 cal 3-ring miniball and a civil war token. The bullet probably was not from military action though since there were no battles here and I cannot find any records of training camps in the area where it was found. According to research, after the war ammunition and firearms were made available for purchase, so likely it was used in hunting or fired for a reason not connected to the civil war anyway.
