Old Nikon 28-80 AF-D

I forgot how badly this lens was made but thing works like charm on the D610.

I have had one since about 2002. Horrible build quality. Wobbly barrel extension, plastic mount,loose focus ring, and yet surprisingly good pictures on the Nikon D2x,the Nikon D3x, the Nikon D610, and the Nikon D800.

I wasn't sure if it would be any good on the higher pixels but dang punchy and sharp.

Nice shot. I bought one of those lenses a couple of months ago, and just love it on my D7200. ($36 w/ free shipping, in excellent shape and the original box! From Robert’s Photo.)

28-80-D, February 2004, Nikon D70.6 million pixels, APS-C SENSOR.

28-80- D on D800, December 2017, 36 million pixels, full frame sensor. Frame 383. Seated full-length to headshot crop-in, ISO 200, Lightroom conversion from RAW. Pretty good detail for a $35 refurbed lens from the Clinton era.

Wowza that is some nice pictures. If i recall the G version was a little better built but not sure if the rendering is as good as the D version. i been looking back at some older lenses but some people say they just cant resolve the higher pixels of todays modern digital I guess depending on what lens.

It's hard to find reviews of these older lenses...the G version is a different optical design.Ken Rockwell's site has a review of the AF-D version.

Thanks yeah i read Ken Rockwell to get some basic information at least he tries things out and most times I think he is very close to being accurate.His review on this lens 28-80 AF-D seems to be spot on. He called it a crap lens but is sharp and renders nicely.

It has an extension front barrel, which was a fairly new invention at the time this lens was released, and that front Barrel extension is wobbly, and yet it does not seem to affect the pictures. The build quality of this is quite sketchy, and yet it is known to be a surprisingly good lens. This was the kit lens for low-end Nikon film cameras throughout part of the 1990s, and as such it is understandable that Nikon made a good effort and at the same time kept costs down. Many people are taken aback by the plastic lens mount, and yet this is not a really critical component in terms of durability. Most people do not change lenses that often and so a plastic lens mount was substituted in place of a metal lens mount. As I recall the lens only weighs 10.4 Oz.

I have one too. Looks like a toy but produces decent results and they are cheap.

My first real lens...got it with my old N90s!! God I love that camera (and lens). Mom got it for me when I went off to art school in Boston in 1996! Took thousands of photos with it. I’ll never speak harshly of it!!
