What's new

OMG OMG OMG! just got a 50mm f 1.8...

Different the first is the 18-55mm at 50mm focal length with its smallest f of 5.6 and the 50mm at f 1.8

Just for fun..

Try shooting them at the same aperture and compare... Then the REAL result will be more noticeable.

I'm a noob still, but am about halfway through Understanding Exposure for the second time (love that book). Wouldn't the proper "test" be pics from both lenses at their smallest apertures, in a low light environment? But they would have different shutter speeds due to the difference in apertures. If you tested both at the same shutter speed, naturally the 1.8 would let in exponentially more light (don't make me do the math now - it's too early!).

When you're comparing lenses in terms of IQ (sharpness, color, contrast, etc.) all things need to be equal. So, same shot, same lighting, aperture, ss and ISO all the same. If it's a zoom vs prime, same f/l, obviously. Otherwise it's really apples and oranges. Both lenses at their smallest apertures in low light at the same ISO will only show you what your fastest ss will be for each lens, as you've already figured out. ;)

Yay!! Good for you! I am doing a happy dance too! I just a couple of days ago got my Canon 85mm 1.8 I'm LOVING IT!!!

Interestengly enough im 21, how old are you? Im just curious for how many years did highschools use these cameras now!!!

uh, it's been almost 30 years since I saw the halls of prison, eer, I mean high school! I imagine these days they're using high end digitals (damn spoiled kids  ).

I think his point wasn't to compare the quality of the lens, but to just show that at 3.5 he didn't have enough light to properly expose the shot, whereas with his 1.8 there was enough available light. so his attempt was to show the extra available light, not sharpness, quality, etc. After all, how much difference can you really see with a compressed jpeg posted on a forum board? Not to speak for him, but I guess I am. Of course, posting the wrong photos doesn't give much insight

I stand corrected if I missed the intent of the comparison. However, in a later post he says the two he wanted to compare were both at f5.6 which led me to believe he was comparing difference in IQ. And actually, if the difference in IQ is substantial enough, you will see it even compressed on a forum board, tho I agree neither will look their best. :sillysmi:

Can't wait for mine to come in! Anyone have experience ordering at UniquePhoto.com? How long does the free shipping take to ship and arrive at my house (California)?

I just got a T2i last week. When I ordered the camera, I just went ahead and ordered the 50mm lens with it because of all the great reviews. So far, I'm lovin it. I just need to get over the "shoot wide open all the time" virus. Is there anything you can take for that or does it just wear off over time?

The quickest way to get over it is to take a bunch of pics wide open, ideally as close to the subject as possible. Post them here for C&C and you'll be over it in no time. ;)

ok try this again... And again this is just a comparison for fun....well for me anyways :D.
the only difference between the shots are the lenses

The 18-55mm

According to the exif both images was taken with the 50 1.8...

how are you getting the exif info? when I right-click it doesn't show that.
Google "Exif" and it should give you a list. I use Jeffery's exif viewer. You have to download the photo then upload it into the exif viewer...

Here in canada we can get them for about 120 a pop. Im actually thinking of picking one up to acompany my 18-55 kit lens. Considering it has such wide aperture opening, would this be good for some celestial shots, question mark. (sorry my keyboard went all french one me and does not want to change). I am too broke to pick up 70-200 mm ( i think thats it) for some of thouse shots. Unless someone can recomend something for cheap thats has good quality. ( sorry for a thread jack)
