Exactly Tim...no need to advocate theft...after just one session of shooting that Tokina on his D800 and ole' Charlie will have it up for say in a Colorado minute!!!!

Hopefully that won't be an issue... but I am picky. The reviews I read state that except for a little CA, and slower focusing... it is nearly as sharp as the Nikon version. So hopefully it is as good as the Nikkor 300 F4.. which was my other option.

Question, do those 3rd parties older generation fast prime lens need to be re-chipped in order to work correctly with the new digital body? If it need to be re-chipped, will Tamron, Sigma or Tokina do that and how much usually cost?

I thought Matthew Lin's article on the exceedingly rare Nikkor 300mm f/2.8 pre-set lens was kind of irksome at the point where he wrote:

"Although my lens is in good cosmetic conditions and fully functional, regretably the previous owner decided to scratch out the serial numbers for unknown reason."

Uh...some unknown reason? The serial numbers of a rare,rare,rare Nikkor of exceedingly high collector value have been "scratched out"??? zOMG....talk about deluding himself...he bought a clearly stolen, ultra-rare lens that's mostly useful as a rare collectible...and he spews that kinda B.S. about why the "previous owner" (cough,cough) scratched out the serial number, and even offers the gem of offering up the "for unknown reason" line of self-delusion. Pathetic. Utterly pathetic. That's what one calls "receiving stolen goods".

The reason I asked was I saw some others listed for Canon. And they seems to be quite good in price as well.

i.e.
180mm macro f/5.6 Ex+ for $205 (This one, I am not too worry about if AF works or not as long as the camera can control the aperture. )

That older Sigma 180 is a great lens... Have seen a lot of beautiful macro work done with it.
