One kid two pictures

This is a co-workers kid and was shot with a D200 and a 28-105 Nikon lens. I don't believe I used my fill for this shot. I might have used my flash but not positive.

Very overexposed.

With the kids in shade.. and the background bright sunny, obviously the background is very overexposed. In a situation like this, fill flash would have helped immensely! You could have have properly exposed both the subjects and the background.

Ty for the comments. It was a rough day out shooting bc of how strong the sun was. Don't do much portrait photography so any more tips would be welcomed

Find some light shade with a fairly plain background. Frame tighter. Yes, I know it's a cute dress, but you can still show the dress and frame tighter. Try some head and shoulders shots as well. Check your EXIF file to see if the flash fired. You can either force the flash or better yet, use a reflector for fill light.

Meter for the background and flash for the subjects. If that yields too harsh a result, you can overexpose the background a stop to two to soften the flash.
