Thoughts on this one? I really like it but obviously I'm biased. Is it boring if you don't know him? What could I have done differently? Thanks :)

IMO, there isn't really of him in the image for someone who doesn't know him. Because you know him, you can 'see' the parts that aren't there, but for the rest of us, it's a pair of sunglasses, nose and lips.

Gotcha, as I suspected. What about without the sunnies? Can you get away with such a close up if the focus is on the eyes?

Possibly- I would open it up a little more though, say to include the area of his glasses which is cropped.

I like the composition (I might have opened it up just a smidge, but not much), but I agree that for the unbiased observer there isn't enough to grab the attention here. This kind of a closeup would really work if
a) the entire face was super sharp (this one is decently sharp, but not super sharp)
b) the face itself had something more interesting going on (like deep laugh lines, or even if he just doesn't shave for a day and you can get sharp stubble)
and/or c) the sunglasses weren't present, so we could see the eyes and any detail/emotion in them.

This is a decent image, it's just lacks something to put it over the top.

Feels uncomfortable looking at the image and one of the main reasons for that is because its too close for this situation. Can't really see much facial features because they are covered by the overly big sunglasses , and the background doesn't seem to help at all.

Zoom out more so you cover his entire face, take the hat and sunglasses off and expose properly and you will have a descent photo.
