Any online Photography courses that would be great for beginners?

What do you want to learn?

If you're learning the basics or any hands-on or interactive sides of photography then I'd avoid online courses. This is because for that learning environment if you want to learn it and pay to learn it then pay for a teacher/tutor to be there with you at the time. To show you how to do things and to watch and make sure you do them right. After the event help really will only be critique which you can get online from forums (like this one you're on right now ).

If you want to learn theory then online courses can be good for that; they can give reference material, put structure and information behind and guide you through. book work and learning that way they are valid (though I can't suggest any courses for you).


If you're learning the basics there are good books out there (lots of them) and many helpful people on forums too. Check out the two links in my signature which take you to the mentor scheme and also give a guide on how to structure your posts for critique (which you can get in any of the galleries we've got on the forums).

If you want book recommendations then:
1) Understanding Exposure by Bryan Peterson - a very good introductory book on how to control exposure. It will walk you through things, give you case studies to try out and aims to teach the core ideas that you can use in any genre of photography.

2) The Digital Photography Book (books 1 - 4) by Scot Kelby - again a great series of beginner level books aimed at getting you up to speed. They'll take you right through from never really using a camera before all the way up.

3) Light Science and Magic 4th edition - if you're ok with the basics of exposure and want to learn about lighting and flash then this is the go-too book to refer to.

4) The Photographers Eye - this is the composition book. Teaching you the core ideas of compositional theories that you can put into practice with your photography.


Any genre of photography will also have many guide books - if you've areas of interest mention them and some here might know good publications to refer you too.

You might try CreativeLive. They offer live, online classes for free, or you can purchase the class and watch it anytime you want.

+1 for Understanding Exposure, a great place to start. Lynda.com and Kelbyone.com are popular online sites and decent value.

This is what I did and I'm going to end up keeping it for a few months based on the number of courses I've picked out. So far I feel that I'm really getting my money's worth out of the PSE11 course.
