Orange filter and colour photography

When I bought my Canon EOS 300 second hand it came with a Hoya Orange filter. I know people use this for B&W but I was wondering if it has any practicle uses for colour photography.

I recently read a photography book that had it used to redden the sunset in a colour photo of what looked like an african savana... that was a great photo and the use of it in that case was where you have a sky and silhouetted stuff and one colour... i think it's very narror use as it's terrible for anything like portraits.. but that particular photo was very effective. Shoot some black and white!
