Ore crusher at old abandoned gold mining town

This is one of the ore crushers at Bodie, an old gold mining ghost town. There was four of these, all right next to each other. I am told the noise was deafening when it was operational. Each of the round piston 'crushers' was about 16" in diameter and driven by a giant cam shaft high above. The ramp in front of the crusher was covered with a sheet of copper, and it was covered in mercury to catch the gold as the crushed ore flowed down the ramp. My, how workplace safety has improved!
