Outdoor family photoshoot

i shot for a friends family, lmk what you guys think!

Love the colours, the lighting and the processing (I'm sure some people will disagree). A good looking family and a good informal portrait. Not sure about the loose crop which shows as much of their neighbourhood as it does of them but it does allow the perspective line of the trees to lead down to them in the photo, I like that. One minor niggle, the young man on the right has a white line on his face that in the smaller size distracted me into wondering what it was. When I looked at full size I could see it was a line of sunlight: that shouldn't be too hard to fix in post. However, looking in full size revealed a major OUCH! To the left of the family at elbow height one of their neighbours has an old mattress leaned up against a tree - thus screwing the idea that is otherwise given that they live in a nicely landscaped affluent area... I'll bet good money that your post skills are up to fixing that.

P.S. I'd also remove the bit of the streetlight sticking out of the side of Dad's head. The devil's in the detail!

I like the angles, the fall of the shadows etc. But I think it'd be better if you could tone down the editing just a little, because the people here look as though as they have been cut and pasted here.

Skin tones on the ladies faces are much too bright, IMO, and even a bit on the men. Lighting is a little harsh. The background is not attractive...who wants to see a bunch of cars? Being shot at F9... you have no separation of subject from background... everything is sharp, no DOF falloff. The subjects are very small in the overall image, unless you meant to do a environment shot... but surely you could find a better location? I would crop 4x5 and get mostly just the subjects.

lol! It is less visible than the cars at least. If this had been shot at F2.8 to F4... it would have improved it a good bit.

Use ND filter or hypersync next time. That way you dont have to have that much depth of field.

thanks! i wanted to catch the neighbourhood in the photographs. thanks for the tips! i noticed the mattress while we were shooting but there was nothing that could be done about. i've tried but it was a pain and i gave up for the day. missed that bit on the lamp, thanks!!

i think i replied most points a bit later on in the post (i replied from last to first), will work on the lighting! haha.

will try next time, but i wanted to get the background in as we wanted to include the neighbourhood too (cars and all, more about the memories/feel of the place i guess). but i'm saving for that ND. haha

Re the mattress, cut and paste/clone some of the top parts of the tree it's leaning on in front of it as a bush, I tried it and I could show you what I mean but you don't allow editing.

Bear in mind that this is a quickie job on a low res image, the bush was created by cutting bits off the tree above the mattress and pasting them in then cleaning up the wrong colours that came with it... I also did a bit of cloning to make the manhole cover at their left less obvious and took out the skid mark on the road to their right.
