I've never done business with them myself, but from listening to others that have they seem to work on a bait and switch scheme. You order a really nice high end digital for a really cheap price, then you get contacted by a pushy sales rep who tries to sell you a ton of upgrades and add ons. If you buy all the upgrades and add ons then you'll normally get the camera you ordered as well, because of course they are making the profit on the upgrades and add ons.

If you refuse to order all the extra crap, your camera doesn't ship. You contact them and they tell you it's on backorder - and you can keep calling and calling but it will never ship. Eventually you cancel the order and they find someone else who is willing to buy all the extra crap to get the camera - of course that poor sucker ends up spending over a grand to add on a bunch of cheap junk that cost Overstock probably as much as $20 wholesale.

That's more or less how these places operate. The other thing they will often do is when you do get the camera and check the serial number you'll find it's not actually a camera that was meant to be sold in the US - they are "direct import" instead. The camera was meant to be sold overseas, not in the US, and as a result it's cheaper because they didn't have to spend all the money on tarriffs, etc. The downside is most authorized repair places won't work on it even under warranty, because it is not a camera that was supposed to be sold in the US.

My advice? Pay a little extra and deal with a reputable outfit - Adorama, B&H Photo, KEH Cameras - I've done business with all three and never had any issues, they all have top notich customer service and stand behind what they sell.

Thanks I just saw the price and posted this thread. Read a few reviews now and agreed that what you said is what they do. Looks like I will be paying more from a better company. Thanks for the reply.

In the case of this seller, I'm guessing there are quite a few shill "ratings" posted. The ***** ratings are very syrupy. Buy from the major, established no BS sellers.

That's the reason I don't rely on online ratings as much myself, it's too easy for a seller like this to pay a couple of kids minimum wage to post glowing reviews for them - it's becoming a more and more common practice with a lot of these scammers.

"Overstock". Using that specific word as part of a company name seems to me to be nothing less than an effort to create a viable rationalization in the minds of customers who very badly WANT TO believe that they can buy an expensive photo/electronics item, at a dealer-to-customer price that is something like 30% below wholesale-priced dealer cost.

The NAME of the company alone is reason to run far, and run fast.

The Canon 70D is $1,299 today, at B&H Photo. I can assure you, B&H Photo pays MORE THAN $729 for each 70D it buys. There is no way in he[[ that Overstock Digitial can buy a Canon 70D at any price that would allow them to actually sell a Canon 70D for $729.

I only use B&H and Adorama for my purchases now. At least if I compare their prices against one another, they either match or not. I go for the lowest bidder for my dollars. I too used to be all over the place before when doing my digital purchases. So far I love these two companies.
