p&s malfunction. canon sd450

my brother's p&s is malfunctioning. it won't turn on unless you open the compartment that houses the battery and sd card.
if you close the flap, the camera shuts off and wont turn back on and if you open it, it turns on.

any ideas?

Sounds like a problem with the electrical contacts, or something like that.

Not sure what you can do with these things, though.
