Panning with an IS lens?

I like to do race horse photography and I pan with the horses as they go by.
I heard that IS lenses arent that good for panning. I currently use my 70-300 lens. I do alright with it. It is not an IS lens. If I do get a telephoto lens for horse racing, should it be IS or non IS?

Most IS lenses have a secondary IS mode that is specifically for panning. It will image stabalize in the verticle but not in the horizontal while in this second mode.

To IS or not IS is a matter of personal choice.

Just be careful with the MOST business. Not all Canon IS lenses have Mode II IS. Also if you have it it works beautifully.

I personally find with lenses that have IS (VR II in my case) that are compatible with panning, that I am more likely to get tact sharp results. YMMV.

The $270 EF-S 55-250 IS has automatic pan sensing.
The $540 EF 70-300 IS has a mode 1 / mode 2 switch.
The $1400 EF 100-400 L IS has a mode 1 / mode 2 switch.

Thanks, id rather have EF 70-300 "L" with no IS than have it with IS and no L

Im still looking around tho, gonna be awhile b4 I get money again... Just got a 50mm F/1.4
