Phot exposure - concert photos

None of those images had noise reduction done in processing? they look really good..

No noise reduction in my photo from the 5D mkII. That was the whole point: see how well it performs on the high end. I took the RAW file through ACR with no processing except WB. I re-sized the photo in Photoshop and applied a standard unsharp mask for web display: radius = .7, amount = 50, threshold = 0.

Yes. D5100 is a very capable camera. I just sometimes get frustrated by some lack of features which are just stupid but it's the best camera for that price.

What frustrates you specifically? I wish it had dual wheels - one for aperture and one for shutter speed...but its not really that big of a deal. I'm used to my camera now so I don't have to "menu-dive" for the shot. Also, it can't really bother me since this is the only DSLR I've had and I've only played with a d7000 once. You can't miss what you've never had.

Yep. Just little things, nothing big. I find the info button at the top of the camera almost useless to me, I'd rather have an extra Fn button. I wouldn't upgrade to a D7000 though, the difference is just too small.

You need something that will hit at least 2.8. a lens with an aperture of 1.4 would be better. Or try to get closer and use some flash if possible. I would say do both.

Hi there,

It is most definitely a lens issue. I have been shooting with the D80 for a few years and it is a very capable camera although with not the best ISO performance. The lens you are using is quite unsuitable. You can pick up a nifty fifty (50mm 1.8) for less than £100 and would be a good starting point. If you need to get closer then there is the range of 2.8 telephotos.

It's not cheap but you get the shots..

I shoot shows from time to time and I'm commonly at 3200-5000+ ISO. Lighting is horrible in shows, especially in the pit.

I just purchased a Nikkor AF 50mm F1.8 lens. I have not had a chance to try it in a dark environment yet.
I went to a wedding on the weekend and there were a couple of professional photographers there. They each had some super lens. It was about 1 foot long and about 4 inches in diameter with a silver metallic looking body. Any ideas as to what sort of lens these were?

You sure it was silver metallic and not Off white?

a lot if wedding photographers shoot with the Canon 70-200L 2.8 IS

The 50 is good in low light but yiu are limited to basically being, on the stage or in the pit and if you are shooting wide open you better be shooting a single subject straight on and not trying to capture more than one person down a line

You are talking about depth of field. I was originally worried about this. I just have to wait and see after some experience. My only other option is a camera with higher ISO like the D5100. At this stage it's a little expensive just for an increased ISO.
