What's new

Photo Forum is Changing rant.

I would say then that you are the vast exception to the "normal" ;)

Well the "normal" has got its work cut out for it. In my humble opinion, that is the single most important and enlightening question you can ever ask someone who's better than you are.

Might I add to my little story from two minutes ago that I learned most through reading posts here on TPF? And from viewing other posters' photos?

I'm paraphrasing a Somerset Maugham quote here

"Beginners who believe they should have all of the same opportunities as more learned photographers would do well to consider the option of being the strong, silent type."

Emerana you seem to be a motivated member yes you learned about Undersanding exposure on this site but the fact that you went out and read it show you are committed to learning not only here but on your own. Its the new members who know of this book or books like it but do not even attempt to read it. If after reading a book you still need guidance that is where a forum like this is very helpful it will clear up concepts that you could not understand on your own.

So here is my proposition to remedy this situation.....
TO ALL THE MEMBERS WHO CARE ABOUT THE QUALITY OF THIS FORUM
when you see a new uninformed post asking what camera to buy, what lens to buy or anything that has been covered hundereds of times on this forum as well as the internet and in publications BURY IT!!! Create a thread of value, relevant to the section of course, right after it.

There is much evidence for that - dating back as far as Mar 2005 I believe

More seriously though, I tend to work it a bit like Corinna - when I can (and have sufficient time to do it justice - this may actually only need 30 secs in some cases) I answer questions, there are some threads though where I just don't have the intestinal fortitude for it though - chances are that you won't see me on any 'what camera' threads. Or lighting, yeah lighting, I'm not big on lighting to be fair...

Oh and buy a Canon [just to save time later]

Or, point them in the right direction or offer them help!

...would it be a bad time to say that I learn't everything I know from forums and the odd website (linked to as the result of a forum question)
I own not a single book on photography -- oh wait I have the Scot Kelby book, so one book -- though there are a few in my amazon wishlist if anyone here has any spare cash?

Read this not long back, felt it was something I ought to read - Photography: A Very Short Introduction - my recommendation would be not to bother. For a short introduction, my recollection is that it was a very long discourse on is it or isn't it; art that is.

Overread I just checked your old posts and you do not fit the profile of the people we are talking about. You probably learned from this forum, by READING a lot of posts and checking out links that others post you probably even searched the net as well. I too learn most of my knowledge through reading posts and searching the net I own a couple photography books and Ill buy photography magazines when I fly but I did learn a lot by reading on this site and shooting thousands of photos. Im not saying you cant learn from a forum like this Im saying rather than just post and ask for everything to be layed out for you do a bit a searching yourself. When I jioned back in 2006 maybe there were better topics and mor to learn from.

ahh but D50 I did not start here - I came here from other places ( acutally I just came here to get purchase adivce - after getting it on several other forums so I had some understanding of what I think I was on about)
here is one place I started in:
http://www.juzaforum.com/forum-en/memberlist.php?mode=viewprofile&u=561

and here is the other:
http://www.amateurphotographer.co.u...opticsforum&what=showflat&page=0&fpart=1&vc=1
the other place I really started was a book forum and - well lets just say that the origins of that disucssion are burried under a mountain of posts now ;)

ps an early me post:

Let's all complain.

I have noticed as well that a few of the old guard are so resistant to newcomers that they see the need to attack and question every bit of advice that certain newcomers (to the forum, not to photography) give.

I've been guilty of that, but never arbitrarily. Only when there's a clear-cut blind leading the blind situation. How is anybody supposed to learn from someone else who has no idea what they're talking about?

The Blind shall lead the Blind ever onwards into danger until those who see in the light come forth to take the hand of the Blind and lead them out
