Hello everybody


I recently got myself into the world of Photography. I bought a Xpro1 in April and have been taking pictures and learning ever since. I have been storing the pictures on IPhoto on my Mac and have been viewing them and organizing them on it. (Question 1: where do you store and organize your pictures?) I feel it’s my time to learn how to adjust the pictures I have taken. I heard that Adobe Lightroom is a very common program to use. Question 2: What program do you use?)

As a student, I was a bit put off by paying a monthly fee for Adobe. What do you advise me?

Storage multiple hard drives, with redundant backups.

My most used software is Capture One Pro, better than Lightroom but more expensive and either Photoshop or Affinity photo.

I store all my data on external drives. I shoot Fuji. I use Iridient for my processing. Affinity is good, but Iridient and Capture 1 are just a bit better. In all honesty, the differences in the final image between Affinity, Iridient and Capture 1 are insignificant.

Light room and photoshop myself. There is a free program called GIMP. I have used it just playing around. It's totally free.

As for storage. Portable drives are fairly in expensive for their size. But they do fail too. I had one of my older ones fail. Not sure when. But the last time I tried to use it. It was toast. So, a multi approach is best. So, I write DVD's, spare drives (have a drive caddy that I can change them out in), and portable drives. USB's are getting cheaper as we go. The slower ones are downright cheap now.

I was the same till yesterday! I have had Photoshop since 6.0. And from 7.0 I upgraded every 2 versions (9.0, 11.0). But now they have it so you have to rent. As for Lightroom 6.0 at $150. I looked at that. And that's basically 16 months worth of Lightroom and Photoshop CC. So, I decided to take the blue pill. Had been using CS4 since it came out till now. Had lightroom and each version since it came out (last purchased was 5).

I also rent Microsoft Office. Need it for work even though they will not provide it.

No it isn't. It is the full program on CD. Don't look at the adobe site. They don't sell it there. Adorama has it for $142 right now.

Adobe Lightroom 6.0 was released on April 21, 2015.
The current version, as of April '17, is 6.10.

Today's version of Photoshop CC is Photoshop 18.
Photoshop 6.0 (code name - Venus in Furs) was released 17 years ago.

For just $9.99 a month ($119.88 per year) you can always have BOTH the latest and greatest Photoshop CC & Lightroom CC.

Seeing as my photography goals are strictly amateur, not for profit, I use an old version of Adobe Elements. The amateur versions of Photoshop and of Premier video editor. Predates the subscription business. If I ever have to go to that, then instead I'll go back to a dual boot system with Windows and Ubuntu and use the Linux photo editor, Gimp.

As for storage and organizing, I just put them all in a self-made folder structure in my internal data storage HD with my default operating system.

If it helps, I've taken to using Open Office which is free. It is compatible with MS Office files. Why not download it and see if it will handle your needs for work. If not, you haven't lost anything.

Buy Lightroom 6 or Capture 1 or PS Elements or Affinity or Corel. Affinity is amazing and is only $39.99. It has the capacity to do levels like photoshop while none of the others do. That may not be important to you but I use levels a lot. Affinity has no organizing capability so your system will work fine with it.

Since I was working with Affinity just now, I'll show you some results. The image below of a bank building was shot with an extreme wide angle lens from street level. The first image is a jpeg made by the camera just as it came out of the camera. It is overexposed, a little washed out, lacking contrast and the building looks like it might topple over backward from the perspective distortion. The second one was done with Affinity all on the raw image. There was no editing at all except in raw or, Affinity calls it, the develop persona. Quick and easy.

Since retiring I've been just a hobbyist photographer and as such I have no problem paying 10 bucks a month for the latest, most up-to-date, most capable software available.
In addition, it's tax deductible on the Schedule "C" I do for the few gigs I do for fun over the course of the year.
