How do you check the in camera meter? Also, if I can, what do the readings mean?

Look in your view finder. It looks like an horizontal ruler

Get the arrow in the middle, you image will be well exposed for your metering mode. To the left is under, to the right is over. Do some googling. The in camera meter is my #1 tool in ensuring exposure.

I really like #4 because of the composition and her expression. One thing I've started learning when shooting photo journalistic candid style, is to anticipate what's about to happen so you can prepare for the shot, try to direct the subject to do something fun when shooting kids (smell that flower, hold your hands up, spin around, etc...), and edit out the shots that aren't great. We all take not so great shots, not showing them is a skill all its own. The other skill thats tough to master is blending in so the subject doesnt even know your shooting them which can get good results sometimes. Overall good job and keep shooting!
