Photographing cylinders

I have a milk can that has a scene painted on it. The painting goes all the way around the can. I need to photograph it and digitally stitch it together, print a flat image to mount on another milk can. I would appreciate any tips on photographing a cylinder.

mount the camera on something, mount the cylendar on something so it cannot move left/right or backward/forward. Shoot multiple, multiple photos while you twist the can in incriments. Take the resulting photo and stitch it.

Place the milk can on a Lazy Susan and your camera on a tripod.
Use a remote shutter release or the self-timer.
Use portrait orientation.
Lighting should NOT include any shadows, i.e. flat lighting.
Take a few test shots to make sure the exposure is correct and your camera position is level with the painting on the can.
Click, rotate.
Rinse and repeat.

Make sure your sequence of shots are overlapping by at least 1/3. Photoshop can easily stitch these together to create one flat image of the entire can.

Do you think stitching software is a good value, or just work it in Photoshop?
(I am still on Photoshop 10)
