Yes. These are called snapshots. Professional images have always required post-processing. Ansel Adams and Margaret Bourke-White had to process their negatives to create the stunning images we're used to, and things haven't changed that much. This is why I still consider myself an amateur. I have practically no post-processing skills. I can take a damn good photograph, but I need to learn what to do with it afterward.

-GIMP and Photoshop are in the group of graphic/editing/manipulation programs .. which have poor (if any) RAW conversion capabilities.

-Lightroom and Aperture and all those are programs specifically designed for "developing digital negatives" (RAW) in an optimised workflow for photographers.

-Picasa, XnView, ACDsee are image viewer with limited (if any) image manipulation features, often based on rather poor algorithms.
Gimp has the UFRaw plugin [ufraw.sf.net] which incorporates dcraw..which is used by Adobe, Bibble Pro, etc etc etc.
