Sorry, your Dad was right! I'd do a reshoot.

I'm not a fan of your smoothing, no offense.

I was sitting here thinking "It looks soft... why hasn't anyone mentioned it looks soft?"

Here I was thinking you missed focus and when I clicked the bar to make the image bigger, I realized that I don't think you missed focus at all... it's just BLATANTLY obvious where you smoothed and where you didn't. It's very distracting and bugs my eyes out a little.

It looks like all you did was try using blur on certain parts of his skin...

I think it was ignored because he already knew that was a problem..

I tried editing it more to his liking by desaturating the background and brightening him up and also adding some skin smoothing (I think it is too much but he still wanted more so we compromised).

Personally, it's a business headshot, I don't see anything wrong with a basic solid backdrop. Get your lighting right and retake the photo. Make him happy. He is your dad and your 'customer'. It is your responsibility as a photographer to make him happy.

Thanks again for the comments.

Goonies, I never take good critiques as insult. I am often blind to my own mistakes which is why I post them here. I really appreciate it.

Also, why are you shooting at 1/200th at 50mm and ISO 800? Why not shoot at 1/100 ISO 400? OR even use a tripod and do like a 1/60th or so at ISO 200? You would probably wind up with a much cleaner and sharper image.

If you are not blind to your own mistakes and you still choose to employ them, are they really mistakes? ;)

He said he thought it was *too much*... as in the amount of skin smoothing was too much... at least that's how I took it.

I'm saying his technique is no good... period.

Alright guys, point taken. I will re-shoot this one as soon as I get back from my vacation. I will keep all of your tips in mind this time.

I didnt read all the comments but the shot looks soft. I am not sure what type of lens you use but I dont like the bokeh at all. It is not creamy enough for me. Also the photo seems soft, very soft. If you zoom in 100% and it looks soft toss it. +1 on the busy background.

How low was your camera? I get the feeling I''m looking up at him.

Also, his face is not sharp like a portrait should be. It looks like the tip of his nose is on focus and it drops off quick due to that f1.8...
