I am a sub-novice at photography but I will give a critique a shot. I feel you face is way over exposed. You have great detail and depth in the sunglasses, but your face and hair are too washed out. I'm not too sure of what to make of the second shot.

Sorry, it was the first thing I thought of when I saw your first photo. It is waaaay over-exposed, making it look like you have no nose. It's also very noisey, or was that the intention?

In order to follow the Rule of Thirds with a crop this tight, you need to crop the top off a bit so that your sunglasses line with the top third of the frame.

I actually like the conversion in the second one, but the photo is not all that interesting.

These shots are very "MySpace". To get an idea of good self portraits, go on Flickr and do a search. You'll see that you can do a lot more than holding the camera at arms length or taking a shot of your reflection in the nearest window.

I really like the second picture. Its very other-worldly and requires some thought to process.

If this is the look or theme you were after, then good job. It looks like you were having fun which is very good.

It is hard to comment without knowing what theme you were going after. They look FaceBookish and fun.

As far as "rules" of photography... not so good as commented above. BUT, the hell with that! You are young, so have fun while you can!!!
