picture.com contest

I submitted a photo to www.picture.com amateur photography contest several weeks ago and just received a mail saying that I am in the semi-finals. It asks me whether or not I want to buy a book with my photo published in it. Is this a scam?

I'm pretty sure I've heard that picture.com is a scam.

It's basically the photo version of those poetry "contests" where they publish anybody who is willing to buy a book. They tell everybody who enters that they are a winner and then they offer you the chance to buy a really high priced book containing the "winners'" pictures. If you order the book, then they publish your picture, along with everyone else that orders one, regardless of quality.

They will try and get you to buy a space in the book for the next 6 months. They will tell you you won and will received a wonderful prize if you go to their convention and pay a sum of money. They will hound you for months. Be prepared.
